The Swiss jazz pianist Irène Schweizer has died at the age of 83, her record label Intakt Records announced on Wednesday. Schweizer was one of the formative personalities of modern jazz and was well-known for her improvisational ability. She also made a name for herself as a drummer. She was self-taught and could barely read music, at least at first. But this did not hinder her rise in the jazz scene.
