US swimmer Regan Smith set a women’s world record in the 100 metre backstroke at the US Olympic trials in Indianapolis on Tuesday. The 22-year-old clocked 57.13 seconds in the final of the trials, breaking the 57.33 record set by Australian star Kaylee McKeown in Hungary last year. In Paris, Smith will be hoping to better her bronze medal performance in Tokyo, where McKeown completed a first-ever sweep of all three women’s backstroke golds. The Paris Olympics begin on July 26.
