Last week, at the annual WWDC conference, Apple announced artificial intelligence features called Apple Intelligence. They will be integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, respectively. Although the newly announced version of the software will be released to the public later this year, it is commonly expected that they will be loaded with Apple Intelligence features. However, this will not happen. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that you will have to wait longer as the rollout will be slow and stretch out to 2025.
Gurman reports that Apple will introduce new features of “Intelligence” in stages, over several months. The company wants to avoid the difficulties faced by other artificial intelligence systems. The company traditionally introduces features announced at WWDC in September, when new iPhones go on sale. This time, Apple showed that the latest AI technology will not follow a strict schedule. At a recent keynote, the company merely presented a roadmap of what’s coming later this year and early next year.
Gurman notes that the delay in the release of Apple Intelligence is better for several reasons. It will help the company manage its resources without overloading its staff to release all features at once. Apple will focus only on American English to have more time to train its AI models in other languages, although this may take years. The company will not rush to strengthen its cloud infrastructure. This will help reduce the risk of server failure due to excessive user load. Apple is also said to be working on correcting meaningless information provided by AI services, starting with a small user base.
According to the employees involved in the development of Apple Intelligence, some features of the service will be available no earlier than next year. These include the updated Siri assistant features that captivated the audience at WWDC, including context-based search, on-screen awareness, and much more. Integration with ChatGPT will also appear in 2025. But on the other hand, the initial version of Apple Intelligence will still have features such as notification prioritization, web page summarization, texting tools, image generation, and Genmoji.
Gurman also notes that features not related to artificial intelligence, including changes to the Mail app, the ability to edit spatial video, and more, will not appear along with updates to the initial version of the software.
