Originating in the 19th century as an equestrian race, the Nevesinje Olympics in the southern Herzegovina region of Bosnia have evolved into a two-week-long cultural celebration with over 30 disciplines, including sack races, tug-of-war and arm wrestling. This year’s event attracted 1,300 competitors from eight countries. Held on Sunday near the small town of some 5,000, the local take on the Olympic Games preserves their rural heritage while drawing increasing numbers of visitors from the Balkans and Europe.
