With Chinese smartphone manufacturers constantly trying to make their foldable phones thinner and lighter, Samsung can’t be far behind. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip phones are already thinner than most other folding phones on the market. However, this is not the case with the Galaxy Z Fold series.

Samsung is expected to answer this challenge later this year with a new model, possibly called the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim. Although the name has not been confirmed, leaks and rumors suggest that this phone will have a thinner and lighter design. A new Korean media report hints that titanium could be a key material to achieve this goal.

Titanium back panel for a stronger and lighter foldable phone

Samsung is reportedly considering using titanium for the back of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim. The back panel is an important part of folding phones as it supports the folding screen and hinge. In current Galaxy Z Fold models, Samsung uses carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for this part.

For the new Z Fold 6 Slim model, Samsung may switch to a titanium back. Titanium is known for being both strong and lightweight, which will make the phone more durable and easier to carry. While CFRP is still an option, it seems likely that Samsung will ultimately go with titanium.

No S Pen support due to titanium back panel

Back in May, it became known that Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim may not support the S Pen. The reason for this may be the use of a titanium back panel. Titanium can interfere with the digitizer, which ensures proper operation of the stylus. This is probably why Samsung decided not to use titanium in previous Galaxy Z Fold models. The Galaxy S24 Ultra has a titanium frame, but since it’s not behind the display, it doesn’t cause the same problem.

Release date and availability

Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim is expected to be announced between October and December this year. However, it looks like this model might be available only in Korea and China. A global release doesn’t seem likely at the moment, and one of the reasons could be the higher price of the phone, which is expected to exceed $2,000.
