A record-breaking breeding season of New Zealand’s most endangered bird is in full flight, the country’s Department of Conservation (DOC) said on Wednesday. With fewer than 40 birds remaining, the tara iti, also known as a fairy tern, breeds at only five nesting sites in the north of the country. A total of 22 eggs were laid during the season, resulting in the successful hatching of 18 chicks, DOC said.
