The United States will impose further sanctions against Russia following the death of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny. A “major package of sanctions” will be announced on Friday, John Kirby, communications director of the US National Security Council, told reporters at the White House. He did not provide details of the new sanctions. The measures are a reaction both to Navalny’s death and to the continued Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. The US has already imposed extensive sanctions on Russia because of the almost two-year long war.
