The official death toll from Japan’s New Year’s Day earthquake jumped to 233 on Monday, with a further 22 people still unaccounted for, authorities said. Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu was jolted by a 7.6-magnitude quake on January 1. The city of Wajima received the brunt of the shaking, but the quake left mountains of rubble, damaged roads and landslides across a significant area of central Japan.
