At least three people were injured after a powerful earthquake jolted the western Chinese region of Xinjiang near the border with Kyrgyzstan in the early hours of Tuesday. The earthquake was registered at a magnitude of 7.1 by the China Earthquake Networks Center, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude at 7. The quake struck at 2:09 am Tuesday (1809 GMT Monday) some 130 kilometres west of the town of Aykol in Xinjiang.
