Five people died and eight were injured when a migrant boat capsized off Malta on Friday morning. The boat was carrying 34 people from Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Syria when it capsized within the confines of an offshore fish farm, roughly 3.5 nautical miles off Malta’s southern coast. A Maltese armed forces vessel was en route to rescue those aboard when the boat sank. Edric Zahra, deputy commander of the armed forces, said that five people died in the incident, eight were taken to hospital and a further 21 were rescued and taken to a detention centre for processing.
