The iPhone 16 series has been making headlines lately. Today, another piece of news has emerged: a new leak reveals the camera specifications of the upcoming smartphones.

It seems that the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will receive the most minor updates. These models will retain the same 48-megapixel primary sensor as their predecessors, but the ultra-wide-angle camera will have an aperture increase from f/2.4 to f/2.2.

It is noteworthy that the leak suggests that these non-Pro models will finally get support for macro photography, a feature that is currently missing from the basic iPhone models.

Rumor has it that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will receive somewhat more significant updates. The main camera will most likely remain the same as last year, but the ultra-wide-angle camera is expected to receive a significant improvement.

The resolution of the ultra-wide-angle camera is rumored to increase from 12-megapixels to 48-megapixels. It will also use pixel splitting for shooting. Each pixel will have a size of 0.7 micrometers, which will effectively create a pixel size of 1.4 micrometers when using binning mode. You’ll also be able to shoot 48-megapixel photos in ProRaw, Apple’s format for creating high-quality images.

In addition to sensor upgrades, Apple will introduce a new JPEG-XL photo format this year, and Pro models will also support 3K video recording at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision.

One of the most anticipated additions is the Capture button on all four iPhone 16 models. The button will be capacitive in nature, meaning you won’t need to physically press it to trigger an action, and it will be dedicated exclusively to camera apps, supporting both Apple and third-party options.

The button is also expected to support force-sensitive half-press, allowing developers to use it for functions such as exposure lock and pre-focus. In addition, its capacitive nature could allow it to function as a trackpad.
