Rufford lies within a short drive of Preston, Southport, on the edge of Ormskirk and a stone’s throw from a motorway network – yet continues to fly under the radar for most Brits passing through the area. It gets its name from Old English ‘ruh’ and ‘ford’ – meaning ‘rough ford’ – due to the fact that it sits where the Leeds-Liverpool canal and River Douglas meet.
