Ookla’s Speedtest Awards are given to mobile network operators that demonstrate exceptional speed and performance compared to other major mobile networks in their market. As in the last half of the year, Vodafone became the leader in mobile internet speed in Ukraine in Q1 and Q2 of 2024.
To determine the winner, Ookla, the world leader in Internet speed testing and analysis, analyzed 2661108 user Speedtest tests. The results of Ookla’s analysis confirm that Vodafone provided the highest overall mobile Internet speed in Ukraine with a Speed Score of 31.79.
In the first half of 2024, Vodafone demonstrated the highest average download speed of 26.87 Mbps.
Increasing speeds
“We are constantly working to ensure stable communication even during power outages. After the massive attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure, the company decided to double its planned investments in energy independence this year,” says Andriy Otroshchenko, Vodafone Ukraine’s Chief Marketing Officer.
According to him, all of the operator’s base stations are equipped with batteries, and the battery fleet is constantly being updated in favor of batteries that are more resistant to constant power outages. The number of base stations that can be powered by generators has been increased by 7 times. The company continues to purchase additional generating capacity and autonomous power supply systems.
Vodafone is working to increase the speed available to users, not only on the basis of 4G. In May this year, Vodafone started testing an indoor 5G solution that the company built together with Nokia in Ivano-Frankivsk at the Promprylad innovation center. These were the first sites in Ukraine where 5G became available not only through special demonstration equipment. It was possible to experience a new level of speed and capabilities of modern technologies using ordinary smartphones and tablets with 5G support.
How Speed Score is calculated
- Only those measurements from the Speedtest program made on smartphones that can reach the highest possible speeds are selected. Therefore, the list includes only different iPhone models.
- If a subscriber performed several tests on the same day in the same location, they are aggregated into one test to eliminate the possible influence of multiple measurements by one user.
The Speed Score value is calculated – the weighted average speed of the mobile Internet, where the main influence is the median download speed (the speed that subscribers will reach on average in a standard scenario of using the mobile Internet).
