A medieval silver seal found in Thorley is in the running to become Hertfordshire Museum Object of the Year 2024. The early 14th matrix, originally used to mark sealing wax on documents, was lost by its owner over 600 years ago. Made from silver, it is engraved in French and reads: “May a false friend be forever shamed.” The matrix, set with an intaglio carved gemstone which is probably green jasper, is a good example of its kind and not much bigger than a penny.
