Belarus was holding parliamentary and local authority elections on Sunday amid calls for a boycott from the authoritarian country’s opposition. In addition to 110 members of the national parliament, around 12,000 representatives of local assemblies are being elected. Belarus strongman Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since July 1994 and weathered widespread protests following the August 2020 presidential elections, has not invited independent observers to monitor the elections.
