Samsung has introduced three new sensors for ISOCELL cameras: ISOCELL GNJ, ISOCELL HP9 and ISOCELL JN5. These sensors are not top-of-the-line models, but they are perfect for telephoto and ultra-wide-angle cameras in smartphones. Many Android smartphone brands, including Samsung, are likely to use these sensors in the future.

ISOCELL GNJ

The ISOCELL GNJ is a 50-megapixel sensor with 1 μm pixels and a 1/1.57-inch optical format. It has dual-pixel autofocus for fast and accurate focusing even in low light conditions. This sensor also has a built-in zoom that works with an optical zoom lens to provide better zoom without significantly sacrificing image quality.

The GNJ matrix has an enhanced anti-reflective layer and high refractive index microlenses to better collect light and reduce unwanted reflections while keeping dark areas natural. It uses silicon oxide between the pixels to reduce noise. It is also energy efficient, consuming 29% less power in preview mode and 34% less power when recording 4K 60fps video.

ISOCELL HP9

ISOCELL HP9 is a new 200-megapixel sensor with a 1/1.4-inch optical format and 0.56 micron pixels. It has 12% higher light sensitivity and 10% better autofocus compared to the old ISOCELL HP3 model. This sensor can be used for both main and telephoto cameras and is already used in the Vivo X100 Ultra telephoto camera.

The HP9 uses a high refractive index microlens that better directs light to the RGB color filter, improving color accuracy, autofocus speed, and light sensitivity. It performs well in low light conditions thanks to its 4×4 pixel resolution and can create realistic background blur. It offers 2x and 4x magnification with the sensor and can achieve 12x optical zoom with the 3x optical zoom lens.

ISOCELL JN5

The ISOCELL JN5 is a 50-megapixel, 1/2.76-inch sensor that will likely be used for ultra-wide-angle cameras in smartphones. It offers better autofocus and a wider color gamut for high-quality images. The sensor utilizes Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (Dual VTG) technology to improve pixel charge transfer while reducing noise in low light conditions. Super Quad Phase Detection (Super QPD) improves autofocus accuracy by comparing horizontal and vertical phase differences.

To enhance dynamic range and HDR, the JN5 uses Dual Slope Gain (DSG) technology that amplifies and converts light signals for a wider range of colors. It also has hardware remosaicing algorithms for faster capture and real-time zoom preview. Its small size makes it suitable for front-facing, telephoto or ultra-wide-angle cameras.
