Apple may be giving Mac users what they’ve been asking for: more RAM. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is testing its upcoming M4 processor-based Macs with a minimum of 16GB of RAM, a significant improvement over the current 8GB standard.

The basic 8GB configuration has been a stumbling block for Mac users, especially those who are creative or have complex workflows.

Of course, you can choose a higher-level model at the time of purchase. But the difference in price between the basic and advanced versions is often quite large. This makes the higher-end models a poor value for money.

Moving to the basic version with 16 GB means that we are likely to see a price increase. But we think Apple will find a way to make the new configuration competitive in the market. They just have to do it!

Going back to the Gurman report, Apple is said to be testing four new Mac models with M4 chips. These chips will be available in 8-core and 10-core versions, similar to those in the latest iPad Pro. Specifically, the top-of-the-line M4 model is likely to have 4 productive cores and 6 efficient cores, while the base model will have 4/4 cores.

In addition to an increase in RAM to 16 GB, there may be other changes. The report suggests a broader M4 update for the Mac lineup, possibly including updates for the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac.

The move to 16GB of RAM as standard is particularly noteworthy because Apple’s M-series chips integrate RAM directly into the processor. This means that upgrading RAM after purchase is virtually impossible.

Thus, 16 GB of RAM in the basic configuration will not only provide smoother operation out of the box, but also save users from having to pay extra for a model with more RAM from the start. These details have yet to be confirmed by Apple, so they remain highly speculative at this point.
