Construction workers in the eastern German state of Saxony have uncovered hundreds of small World War II grenades during excavation work, police in the town of Torgau north-east of Leipzig reported on Sunday. A few were exposed on Friday, when bomb disposal experts were called in. Further grenades were then found, taking the total to almost 700. They were then removed for disposal. The grenades were described as “Wurfgranaten” – small grenades for firing from a flare pistol or similar. German construction workers frequently uncover unexploded ordnance.
