Apple plans to unveil the iPhone 16 series on September 9, but the upcoming iPhone 17 series has already grabbed some of the attention.

The 2025 iPhones are expected to bring some big changes, including the introduction of the all-new iPhone 17 Slim and support for 120Hz ProMotion across all models.

A recent leak from China adds another update to this list: RAM capacity. According to the leak, the iPhone 17 series will have 12 GB of RAM in all models.

The leak also mentions that the iPhone 16 series will come with 8GB of RAM. Last year, only the iPhone 15 Pro models had 8 GB, while the standard variants had 6 GB. However, it looks like Apple is finally eliminating this inequality.

The increase in memory is not just to improve performance, although it will certainly help with that. The main reason is the development of Apple’s plans for artificial intelligence functions on devices. Running AI directly on a device requires sufficient processing power and memory, and this is where increasing RAM will play a crucial role.

Google has taken a similar approach with its Pixel 9 phones, where even the standard model now starts with 12GB of RAM. Some of this memory is dedicated to artificial intelligence tasks on the device.

The iPhone 16 series is said to still have AI or Apple Intelligence features that are mostly cloud-based. However, it is rumored that the iPhone 17 will see a significant shift towards AI processing on the device, and hence a significant RAM upgrade.

Take this leak with a grain of salt, however, as it came from a lesser-known source. We can be a little more confident about this if the upcoming iPhone 16 series will indeed feature 8GB of RAM, as the source claims.
