Italy’s Nicolò Martinenghi defeated top favourite Adam Peaty to take the men’s 100m breaststroke gold at the Paris Olympics. The Italian, who claimed bronze in the event at the Tokyo Games, finished the race in 59.03 seconds – only 0.02s ahead of Peaty, who shared silver with Nic Fink of the United States. Peaty was looking to become only the second male swimmer after Micheal Phelps to win 100m breaststroke gold at three straight Games after success at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Martinenghi’s medal was the first gold for Italy at the Paris Games.
