Select Aldi stores across the UK will start to sell crownless pineapples so the crown can be better recycled by the retailer. This comes as the supermarket changed the packaging on bananas to reduce how much plastic is used. Shoppers often throw away the leafy top of the fruit but this part of pineapples can be used in other ways, such as to cultivate next year’s crop or as animal feed. Aldi will remove the crowns before the fruit hits shelves and ensure they are put to good use.
