Top favourite Tatjana Smith claimed the first gold for South Africa at the Paris Games with a win in the women’s 100-metre breaststroke. After taking silver in the event at Tokyo 2020, Smith clocked the fastest time of 1 minute 05.28 seconds to beat world champion Tang Qianting of China by 0.26 seconds. Mona McSharry took bronze for Ireland. World record holder Lilly King of the US was fourth, missing the podium by 0.01.
