The German government is sceptical about the proposal by some EU states to establish new contacts with the government of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. It is clear the Syrian leadership “continues to commit the most serious human rights crimes against its own population on a daily basis,” a ministry spokesman said. “As long as this is the case, one cannot really want to move toward normalizing relations with the Syrian regime,” he said.
