Rakuten Viber, one of the world’s leading communication platforms with a focus on user data security, has successfully passed the SOC 2 (System Organization Control) Type II security certification.

SOC is a framework designed to assess data security and management. The SOC 2 certification is intended for SaaS (Software as a Service) companies. Type II, on the other hand, tests all security systems for a certain period of time (from 3 months to a year).

The assessment criteria include security, availability, confidentiality, data processing integrity and privacy. The SOC was developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). The AICPA sets ethical and auditing standards in the United States.

Conducting an audit

The audit was conducted by Ernst & Young. The audit confirmed that all of Rakuten Viber’s practices, procedures, operations, and security policies comply with SOC 2 standards.

“Obtaining the SOC 2 Type 2 certification is an important milestone for Rakuten Viber and further evidence of our commitment to providing security and privacy for users,” said Liad Schnell, Vice President of Engineering and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).

In his opinion, this certification confirms the company’s proactive approach to information security and commitment to maintaining the highest data protection standards.

Priority for Rakuten Viber

“The confidentiality and integrity of the information entrusted to us remains our priority. We are committed to continuing to ensure the reliability of our messaging platform for our users around the world,” adds Schnell.

In addition to complying with the SOC 2 standard, Rakuten Viber is introducing a number of improvements to its infrastructure, including additional levels of data redundancy and improved platform monitoring. In 2016, Viber became one of the first major messengers to implement end-to-end encryption for all personal and group chats and calls by default.
