There were tumultuous scenes as German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited a refugee camp in Malakasa near the Greek capital Athens on Wednesday. Hundreds of asylum seekers greeted Steinmeier with loud shouts of “Germany, Germany” and followed him from behind a high fence as he walked through the camp facilities. Some of the people held in the camp tried to get through to Steinmeier, but were forced back by security guards. The president cut his visit short by half an hour because of the tense atmosphere.
