Romania and Bulgaria joined the Schengen area on Easter Sunday, although some border controls will remain in place. This means that checks on people at internal air and sea borders, i.e. at airports and seaports, will no longer apply. The EU countries had agreed to add Bulgaria to the Schengen zone at the end of December 2023.
