The right-wing alliance of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni suffered a defeat in the country’s first regional elections this year, with results on Tuesday declaring a centre-left candidate the new regional president of Sardinia. Alessandra Todde of the centre-left Five Star Movement narrowly beat Paolo Truzzu, the candidate for Meloni’s three-party coalition, who had been considered the favourite.
